Advair Diskus (drug name Fluticasone/Salmeterol) is used for both, the prevention as well as treatment of asthma and other lung conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

However, your doctor may also prescribe Advair Diskus for other breathing conditions if found appropriate.

How to use Advair Diskus

The ideal way to use Advair Diskus is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

Advair diskus has a patient instruction booklet which must be read carefully each time you use the medication. You must not use a spacer with Advair Diskus.

Hold the device in a flat level position and put the thumb of your other hand on the thumb grip.

Push your thumb away from you as far as it will go and the mouthpiece will appear and snap into position.
Hold the device in a level, flat position with the mouthpiece toward you. Slide the lever away from you as far as it will go until it clicks.
Take care to not move the device or play with the lever as it will only waste doses.
Breathe out fully holding the device away from your mouth. Now, put the mouthpiece to your lips and breathe in deeply.
Once you are done, remove the device and hold your breath for about 10 seconds or for a duration that you are able to hold it comfortably.
Close the device.

Place your thumb on the grip again and this time, slide it towards you and you will hear the device click shut. The lever will come back to the original position.
Advair Diskus is a fine powder and may or may not have a taste. Some patients feel it while others donít. Do not use a double dose if you donít feel it. You may also contact your doctor if you are not sure that you received the dose.

Rinse your mouth with water after you use Advair Diskus. And if you have been prescribed other medication then space them apart by at least 2 hours after you use Advair Diskus.

The dosage for Advair Diskus must be taken at least 12 hours apart from each other unless your doctor advises you to do so.

Throw it away after its one month of you removing it from the pouch or if the dosage indicator reads 0.

Preferably, Advair Diskus should be taken at the same time each day to help maintain a regular routine for taking it.

You must not stop taking Advair Diskus without consulting your doctor even if you attain relief after a short while post starting treatment.

Drug Class and Mechanism

This drug is mainly used for treating breathing disorders, it works by reducing inflammation and widening the airways in the lungs, which helps in breathing easily. Advair Diskus is a long-acting corticosteroid and bronchodilator combination.

Missed Dose

It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Advair Diskus to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.

On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.


Store Advair Diskus between 68 to 77 degrees F (20 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light.
Avoid storing Advair Diskus in the bathroom.
Consult your doctor before using Advair Diskus if you have conditions like high blood acid levels (eg, ketoacidosis) or a history of diabetes, glaucoma, or increased pressure in the eye, heart problems (eg, fast or irregular heartbeat, heart blood vessel problems), high blood pressure, nervous system problems, liver problems, low blood potassium levels, seizures, thyroid problems, or an adrenal gland tumor, if you are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (eg, phenelzine) or tricyclic antidepressant (eg, amitriptyline), or if you have taken either of these medicines within the last 14 days,if you are having a COPD flare-up, have recently been to an emergency room for asthma, have a history of frequent hospitalizations for asthma, or have ever had a life-threatening asthma attackif you have a fungal, bacterial, or parasitic infection; a viral infection (eg, measles, chickenpox, shingles); herpes virus infection of the eye; tuberculosis (TB); a history of a positive TB skin test; or immune system problems; or if you have had a recent vaccinationif you have weak bones (osteoporosis) or have risk factors for osteoporosis (eg, a family history of osteoporosis, tobacco use, long-term use of corticosteroids or certain seizure medicines, limited physical exercise, poor nutrition), if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.

Do not use Advair Diskus if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or to milk proteins, if you are having an asthma attack eg, sudden, severe onset or worsening of asthma symptoms such as chest tightness, cough, shortness of breath, wheezing) or if you are using another type of long-acting inhaled bronchodilator (eg, formoterol inhalation powder, salmeterol inhalation powder), you are taking an azole antifungal (eg, ketoconazole), certain HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), a macrolide antibiotic (eg, clarithromycin), nefazodone, or telithromycin.

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Advair Diskus. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:Diuretics (eg, hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide) or long-acting inhaled bronchodilators (eg, salmeterol inhalation powder, formoterol inhalation powder), Beta-blockers (eg, propranolol) Azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitors (eg, entacapone), delavirdine, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, ritonavir), macrolide antibiotics (eg, clarithromycin), MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), nefazodone, short-acting beta-agonist bronchodilators (eg, albuterol), telithromycin, or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline).

The above mentioned medications have varied reactions with Advair Diskus. While some reduce the efficiency of Advair Diskus, others have adverse side effects.

If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Advair Diskus as Advair Diskus may harm your fetus.

If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Advair Diskus is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.
Most drugs have some kind of side effects associated with them. However, most people do not experience them at all or experience just mild side effects which subside as the body adjusts to the medicine.

Some of the mild side effects are Diarrhea; dizziness; headache; mild muscle or bone pain; nausea; nervousness; throat irritation; tremor; vomiting.

However, please contact your doctor if these side effects do not go away after a while or start bothering you. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); behavior changes; blurred vision or other vision changes; chest pain; choking; fast or irregular heartbeat; hoarseness; numbness or tingling in hands or feet; seizures; severe muscle weakness, cramps, or spasms; severe or persistent bone pain; severe or persistent dizziness or headache; signs of infection (eg, fever, chills, persistent headache/sore throat, ear pain, increased mucus production or change in mucus color); swelling or tightness in the throat; trouble sleeping; unusual tiredness or weakness; vaginal odor or discharge; weight gain; white patches or sores on the tongue or mouth; worsening of asthma symptoms (eg, increased wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath).
