Combivent is a combination drug of Albuterol and Ipratropium and it is used to prevent bronchospasm in patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is usually prescribed in people who are also using other medication to control their condition.

However, your doctor may also prescribe Combivent for other conditions if found appropriate.

How to use Combivent

The ideal way to use Combivent is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

Start off by shaking the inhaler vigorously for about 10 seconds before you use it each time. Breathe out completely, place the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips around it.
To avoid spraying it into your eyes, close it and then breathe in gently while pushing down on the canister.

Now hold your breath for about 10 seconds or for as long as you are comfortably able to hold it. If you are using multiple inhalations, then wait for at least 2 minutes before using it again.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Combivent is a bronchodilator combination that works by relaxing the airways. It thereby lets more air flow into the lungs.

Missed Dose

It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Combivent to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.

On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.

Store Combivent between 59 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.

Avoid storing Combivent in the bathroom.
Do not use Combivent if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), if you are allergic to soybeans, peanuts, or other food products that contain soya lecithin.
