Description
Exelon, also known as Rivastigmine, is a well known oral medication which is useful for treating those patients who are suffering from Alzheimers or the Parkinson disease.
Drug Uses

Exelon being a cholinesterase inhibitor is useful for treating loss of memory as well as thinking problems caused by the Alzheimer or the Parkinson disease. It can also be used for treating a number of certain other conditions as determined by your medical practitioner.

Usage

Medication must always be taken as advised by your medical practitioner/physician. If you are unsure, then please contact your physician for precise instructions. On the other hand, the medicine label usually contains dosage instructions which also may be followed.

Exelon may be taken with a meal and two dosages in a day so as to prevent stomach problems.

A full glass of water when taken with Exelon always ensures better absorption.

Medications are prescribed according to a dosage schedule which must be completed in order to reap the benefits of the treatment. Lapsed schedules render Exelon ineffective. So, never stop in between unless advised by your physician.

One of the best ways to ensure that you do not miss out on a dose is to maintain a fixed regime for consuming Exelon each day.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Exelon belonging to the group of oral medication is useful for the treatment of the patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease. It belongs to a class of drugs which is known as the cholinesterase inhibitors which also includes tacrin, donezepil, and galantamine. These inhibitors seek to block the action of acetylcholinesterase, and are it the enzyme which is actually responsible for the destruction of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine being one among the several neurotransmitters in the brain, chemicals that nerve cells use to communicate with one another. A reduced level of acetylcholine in your brain is believed to be responsible for some of the signs of the Alzheimer's disease. By creating a blockage for the enzyme which seeks to destroy acetylcholine, exelon helps in increasing the concentration of acetylcholine in your brain, and this increase is believed to be responsible for the improvement in thinking seen with exelon.

Missed Dose

You must maintain a schedule for taking the medicine at the same time each day so that you do not miss out on any doses. But, in the advent of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember so that you can compensate for the loss of the dose.

But, then you may need to adjust your remaining doses accordingly. And if it is almost time for the next dose, then please skip the missed dose and continue with the normal schedule.

Never try to compensate for the missed dose by taking a double dose together. It may cause adverse effects.

Storage

Exelon must be stored at a cool and dark place that prevents it from direct exposure to sunlight. It should also be protected from kids and pets. You can store it at room temperature preferably at 25 degrees C.
Warning/Precautions

If you are allergic to any ingredient in Exelon (you may check medicine label) then please do not use it without consulting your doctor.

Drugs which are known for causing anticholinergic effects and can cross into your brain, like atropine, benztropine, and trihexyphenidy seek to oppose the effects of Exelon and thus should be avoided during the therapy with exelon. Unlike donepezil, Exelon did not cause the blood levels of other medications to rise and increase their risk for side effects.

This must include any and all diseases that you have suffered /suffer from, all subscription and over the counter medication that you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements. This will help avoid a possible interaction or allergy.

In some cases, the medication might be altered or require special attention if you suffer from conditions like asthma, breathing disorders, allergies, if you are pregnant or breast feeding mother, are suffering from certain heart conditions or even eating disorders and seizures.
