Isoptin is primarily prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure. However, your doctor may also prescribe Isoptin for other conditions if found appropriate.

How to use Isoptin

The ideal way to use Isoptin is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

Isoptin may be taken with or without a meal to avoid stomach problems.

Isoptin should be swallowed whole taking care that you do not crush or chew it before swallowing it.

Grapefruit and its components should be completely avoided while you are taking Isoptin.

Preferably, Isoptin should be taken at the same time each day to help maintain a regular routine for taking it.

You must not stop taking Isoptin without consulting your doctor even if you attain relief after a short while post starting treatment.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Isoptin belongs to a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers and it dilates the blood vessels and helps reduce blood pressure.

Missed Dose

It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Isoptin to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.

On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.


Store Isoptin between 59 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.

Avoid storing Isoptin in the bathroom.
Consult your doctor before using Isoptin if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.

Do not use Isoptin if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), if you have certain heart problems (eg, left-ventricular dysfunction, sick sinus syndrome, second- or third-degree heart block and do not have a pacemaker), very low blood pressure, or moderate to severe congestive heart failure, you have atrial fibrillation or flutter and a pre-excitation syndromes (extra conduction pathway in the heart), such as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW) or Lown-Ganong-Levine syndrome (LGL), you have shock due to serious heart problems, you are taking dofetilide, eletriptan, erythromycin, or disopyramide.

You must avoid taking alcoholic beverages while using Isoptin as it can increase the chances of becoming drowsy, faint or dizzy. Potentially hazardous tasks like driving, handling heavy machinery should also be avoided.

If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Isoptin as Isoptin may harm your fetus.

If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Isoptin is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.

You must inform your doctor or your dentist about Isoptin before you undergo treatment or any emergency surgery.

You may be required to undergo certain lab tests including liver function, kidney function, complete blood cell count, and blood pressure while taking Isoptin. These tests are prescribed to monitor the progress as well as the severity of side effects. Please do not miss any lab appointments.

Please maintain caution while using Isoptin in children below years of 18 age as the safety as well as effectiveness of Isoptin in these patients are yet to be ascertained.
Most drugs have some kind of side effects associated with them. However, most people do not experience them at all or experience just mild side effects which subside as the body adjusts to the medicine.

Some of the mild but common side effects of Isoptin are constipation, dizziness, fatigue, general feeling of being unwell, headache, lightheadedness, nausea.

However, please contact your doctor if these side effects do not go away after a while or start bothering you.

On the other hand, Isoptin may also cause some severe side effects like severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), chest pain, dark urine, fever, lightheadedness, especially upon standing, severe dizziness, shortness of breath, swelling of feet or hands, unusually fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, yellowing of the eyes or skin.

Please seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these severe side effects.
