How to use Nolvadex

The ideal way to use Nolvadex is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

Nolvadex may be taken with or without a meal to avoid stomach problems.

Nolvadex should be taken with a full glass of water or any other non alcoholic beverage.

Nolvadex should be swallowed whole taking care that you do not crush or chew it before swallowing it.

Preferably, Nolvadex should be taken at the same time each day to help maintain a regular routine for taking it.

You must not stop taking Nolvadex without consulting your doctor even if you attain relief after a short while post starting treatment.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Nolvadex is an anti estrogen that restricts the secretion of estrogen in the body. Certain cancers are promoted by the action of estrogen and Nolvadex helps to restrict their growth.

Missed Dose

It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Nolvadex to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.

On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.


Store Nolvadex between 68 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.

Avoid storing Nolvadex in the bathroom.
Consult your doctor before using Nolvadex if you have conditions like, if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.

Do not use Nolvadex if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), you are using Nolvadex to reduce your risk of breast cancer and you have a history of blood clots in the lung or leg; you are using Nolvadex to reduce your risk of breast cancer and you also take certain anticoagulants (eg, warfarin); you are taking anastrozole.

You must avoid taking alcoholic beverages while using Nolvadex as it can increase the chances of becoming drowsy, faint or dizzy. Potentially hazardous tasks like driving, handling heavy machinery should also be avoided.

Nolvadex is known to weaken the immune system and also the body’s ability to clot blood. So avoid contact with people who may have seemingly common infections like cough and cold. Also avoid strenuous situations which may cause injury or bruising.

In some patients, cancer has developed in other parts of the body except the uterus while they were on treatment with Nolvadex. It remains unknown whether Nolvadex was the cause. You must speak to your doctor about your options.

A breast exam, mammogram, and gynecological exam, should be carried out before starting treatment with Nolvadex.

Women should also use alternative methods of birth control as Nolvadex is known to make your hormonal birth control pill less effective.

If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Nolvadex as Nolvadex may harm your fetus. You must not become pregnant for at least a 2 month period after using Nolvadex.

If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Nolvadex is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.

You must inform your doctor or your dentist about Nolvadex before you undergo treatment or any emergency surgery.

You may be required to undergo certain lab tests including breast exams, mammograms, gynecologic exams, complete blood counts, and liver function testswhile taking Nolvadex. These tests are prescribed to monitor the progress as well as the severity of side effects. Please do not miss any lab appointments.

Please maintain caution while using Nolvadex in children as the safety as well as effectiveness of Nolvadex in these patients are yet to be ascertained.

Please remember that Nolvadex does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV or against an unwanted pregnancy.
Most drugs have some kind of side effects associated with them. However, most people do not experience them at all or experience just mild side effects which subside as the body adjusts to the medicine.

Some of the mild but common side effects of Nolvadex are bone pain; constipation; coughing; hot flashes; muscle pain; nausea; tiredness; vaginal discharge; weight loss.

However, please contact your doctor if these side effects do not go away after a while or start bothering you.

On the other hand, Nolvadex may also cause some severe side effects like severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unexplained hoarseness); abnormal menstrual periods; abnormal vaginal bleeding or bloody discharge; chest pain; coughing up blood; dark urine; decreased sexual desire or ability; depression; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; groin or pelvic pain or pressure; loss of appetite; loss of balance or coordination; missed menstrual period; new or increased breast tumor or pain; new or unusual lumps; one-sided weakness; pain or swelling in one or both legs; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; severe or persistent tiredness or weakness; shortness of breath; skin changes; stomach pain; sudden severe headache; swelling of the arms or the legs; unusual bleeding or bruising; vision or speech problems; yellowing of the eyes or skin.

Please seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these severe side effects.
