How to use Parlodel

The ideal way to use Parlodel is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

Parlodel may be taken with or without a meal.

Parlodel should be taken with a full glass of water.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Parlodel is prescribed for the treatment of symptoms associated with low levels of dopamine in the brain and it also blocks the release of prolactin and lowers the levels of growth hormones in some patients. It belongs to a group of drugs called Dopamine Antagonists.

Missed Dose

It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Parlodel to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.

On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.


Store Parlodel at 77 degrees F (25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.

Avoid storing Parlodel in the bathroom.
Consult your doctor before using Parlodel if you have conditions like, if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.

Do not use Parlodel if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), or to to ergot alkaloids, you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or developed high blood pressure associated with pregnancy; you have blood poisoning during pregnancy; you have recently given birth and have coronary artery disease (chest pain) or other severe heart disease; you are taking Parlodel only for hyperprolactinemia and become pregnant.

You must avoid taking alcoholic beverages while using Parlodel as it can increase the chances of becoming drowsy, faint or dizzy. Potentially hazardous tasks like driving, handling heavy machinery should also be avoided.

If you are using Parlodel for treating a brain tumor then stopping the drug suddenly can lead to a relapse of the tumor rapidly.

It may decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pill also. So ensure that you use another form of effective birth control while you are using Parlodel.

Patients undergoing treatment for high blood pressure often report a feeling of being worn out and tired for the first few weeks of the treatment cycle. If you experience this, then do not stop taking Parlodel suddenly without consulting your doctor.

If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Parlodel as Parlodel may harm your fetus.

If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Parlodel is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.

Parlodel can interact with certain medicines. So, you must inform your doctor if you are taking

Parlodel may affect your blood sugar level so please monitor your blood sugar under the supervision of your doctor.

You must inform your doctor or your dentist about Parlodel before you undergo treatment or any emergency surgery.

You may be required to undergo certain lab tests including blood pressure, liver and kidney function, heart function, and blood cell counts while taking Parlodel. These tests are prescribed to monitor the progress as well as the severity of side effects. Please do not miss any lab appointments.

Please maintain caution while using Parlodel in children below 15 years of age as the safety as well as effectiveness of Parlodel in these patients are yet to be ascertained.
Most drugs have some kind of side effects associated with them. However, most people do not experience them at all or experience just mild side effects which subside as the body adjusts to the medicine.

Some of the mild but common side effects of Parlodel are cold sensitivity in fingers and toes; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; fatigue; headache; indigestion; lightheadedness; loss of appetite; nausea; stomach cramps; stuffy nose; vomiting.

However, please contact your doctor if these side effects do not go away after a while or start bothering you.

On the other hand, Parlodel may also cause some severe side effects like severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); abnormal involuntary movements; bloody or black, tarry stools; chest pain; depression; fainting; hallucinations; one-sided weakness; persistent, watery nasal discharge; progressive, severe headache; shortness of breath; ringing in the ears; seizures; slurred speech or trouble speaking; stomach pain; sudden confusion; sudden daytime sleepiness; sudden loss of coordination; vision changes; vomiting blood or a substance like coffee grounds.

Please seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these severe side effects.
