How to use Prednisone

The ideal way to use Prednisone is to follow the instructions of your doctor. An alternative way is to check the medicine label for dosage instructions.

Prednisone should be taken with a meal to avoid stomach problems.

Prednisone should be taken with a full glass of water.

You must not stop taking Prednisone without consulting your doctor even if you attain relief after a short while post starting treatment.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Prednisone is a corticosteroid that reduces the inflammation and pain by preventing tissues to responding to inflammation. It also alters the body’s reaction to certain immune stimulus.

Missed Dose

It is important that you maintain a strict schedule for taking Prednisone to ensure that you do not miss any doses. But if you do, then you may take it as soon as you remember provided that you space out the next dosage accordingly.

On the other hand, if it is almost time for the next dose, then omit this dose and continue with your normal dosage schedule.

Never consume two doses to compensate for a missed dosage.

Storage

Store Prednisone between 68 to 77 degrees F (15 and 25 Degrees), at room temperature. Ensure that you protect it from direct exposure to heat/moisture/light and from the reach of children and pets.

Avoid storing Prednisone in the bathroom.
Consult your doctor before using Prednisone if you are scheduled for a vaccination with a live virus vaccine (eg, smallpox), if you have an underactive thyroid, liver or kidney problems, diabetes, or ulcerative colitis, if you have heart problems, esophagitis, gastritis, stomach obstruction or perforation, or an ulcer, if you have a history of mental problems, such as depression, if you have a herpes infection in your eye or any other type of infection (bacterial, fungal, or viral); have or recently had tuberculosis (TB) or tested positive for TB, measles, or chickenpox, if you have any kind of allergies to food items, medicines or other substances, if you are using some kind of herbal preparation, dietary supplement, prescription or non prescription drug.

Do not use Prednisone if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in it (read medicine label if unsure), you have a systemic fungal infection, you are currently taking mifepristone.

You must avoid taking alcoholic beverages while using Prednisone as it can increase the chances of becoming drowsy, faint or dizzy. Potentially hazardous tasks like driving, handling heavy machinery should also be avoided.

If you are pregnant or have plans for a pregnancy, then consult your doctor before using Prednisone as Prednisone may harm your fetus.

If you are breast feeding then please maintain caution as it is unknown whether Prednisone is passed into the breast milk. So please consult your doctor prior to using it.

Prednisone can interact with certain medicines. So, you must inform your doctor if you are taking Barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), or rifampin, Clarithromycin azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), steroidal contraceptives (eg, desogestrel), or troleandomycin, Methotrexate or ritodrine, Hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), mifepristone, or live vaccines, Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) or aspirin.

Prednisone is known to make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. So excessive sun exposure without using protection (sunscreen or protective clothing) or exposure to tanning booths and sunlamps must be avoided.

Please maintain caution while using Prednisone in and elderly patients as the safety as well as effectiveness of Prednisone in these patients are yet to be ascertained
Most drugs have some kind of side effects associated with them. However, most people do not experience them at all or experience just mild side effects which subside as the body adjusts to the medicine.

Some of the mild but common side effects of Prednisone are difficulty sleeping; feeling of a whirling motion; increased appetite; increased sweating; indigestion; mood changes; nervousness.

However, please contact your doctor if these side effects do not go away after a while or start bothering you.

On the other hand, Prednisone may also cause some severe side effects like severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); appetite loss; black, tarry stools; changes in menstrual periods; convulsions; depression; diarrhea; dizziness; exaggerated sense of well-being; fever; general body discomfort; headache; increased pressure in the eye; joint or muscle pain; mood swings; muscle weakness; personality changes; prolonged sore throat, cold, or fever; puffing of the face; severe nausea or vomiting; swelling of feet or legs; unusual weight gain; vomiting material that looks like coffee grounds; weakness; weight loss.
